Korission Lagoon & Issos Dunes

39° 26.7′ N · 19° 54.6′ E

A 427-hectare Natura 2000 lagoon cut off from the sea by Chalikounas beach and sand dunes over 15 m high, with juniper forest, orchids and more than 126 bird species recorded — greater flamingos among them in autumn.

Practical

Coordinate is the lagoon (OpenStreetMap). Birds include great cormorants, Eurasian wigeons and great egrets; the Corfu dwarf goby is endemic (Wikipedia). Flamingos gather in autumn (SeaDreamers). Issos beach at the south end has sand dunes, shallow water and frequent wind, popular with windsurfers (Greeka; OSM 39.42931, 19.93933). The outside coast is open SW-facing beach — not an anchorage; visit by taxi from Petriti, Boukari or Benitses.
