Venetiko Islet Dive Sites (S Chios)

38° 7.5′ N · 26° 0.9′ E

Four boat-dive sites on the walls and boulders around Venetiko islet, the best-known diving at the south end of Chios: a canyon of sponges and anemones on the north side and groupers, tuna and amberjack on the deeper south slope.

Practical

Coordinate is the islet itself (Greek Wikipedia infobox); the sites lie on each side of it. Kamari Blue Ride (Agia Fotini, about 15 nm away) describes them: WEST, a rock wall draped with an old fishing net at about 15 m; NORTH, a rock wall and underwater canyon with sponges, anemones and many fish; EAST, big boulders full of crevices with octopus and cuttlefish; SOUTH, a deeper, gradual slope with groupers, tuna and amberjack. They usually dive it as a 2-day, 2-dive schedule, choosing the side by the weather. Their listed prices: Try Scuba €70, Open Water course €450 (site undated — verify locally). The islet is a Natura 2000 bird reserve: no landing and no disturbance of the falcon cliffs. Exposed — dive it in settled weather; from a yacht, go with the dive boat rather than anchoring off the rock.
