Emporios Bay & Mavra Volia Snorkel (Chios)

38° 11.2′ N · 26° 1.9′ E

Snorkel straight off the boat in Emporios cove and along the black volcanic boulders that frame Mavra Volia next door — crystal water over lava rock and pebbles, the southern coast's classic snorkel for all ages.

Practical

Pin is the Emporios cove anchorage (Grecosailor position, 38°11'15.4"N 26°01'48.6"E). Kamari Blue Ride's south-coast cruise stops here and calls the seabed a snorkelling spot for all ages; ferryhopper describes Mavra Volia's crystal waters, huge rocks and volcanic black pebbles. Best along the rocky ledges that run about 20 m off the north shore and 50 m off the south shore of the cove (keep the anchor clear of them) and around the headland boulders toward Mavra Volia. Water is cold even in midsummer — a shorty helps. Protected except from the east; an east swell spoils visibility. Watch for swimmers and the old sunken anchor and chain mid-bay.

Best for

Easy rock-and-pebble snorkel from the anchorage
