Emporios Cove & Mavra Volia (Chios)

38° 11.2′ N · 26° 1.9′ E

A lovely natural cove on the SE tip of Chios with tavernas at its head, a Bronze Age dig on the hill, and a short walk over the headland to Mavra Volia — a beach of black volcanic pebbles.

Practical

Room for 3-4 yachts to free-anchor in the centre in 4-5 m using no more than 20 m of chain; later arrivals anchor and take lines to the rocks on the north shore or to the small village jetty (CruisersWiki). Good holding in sand, crystal-clear water. HAZARDS: several abandoned anchors and chains on the bottom — Grecosailor also reports an old sunken anchor and chain near mid-bay; a rocky ledge runs about 50 m off the south shore and about 20 m off the north shore. Best spot just north of centre between the small church on the north side and the pole at the end of the south quay. Protected on all sides except east (Grecosailor). Busy at weekends in July–August. Tavernas Poseidonas and Emporios (lobster tank) on the water (greektravel); small store with limited supplies. Mavra Volia: no facilities, chilly clear water, rarely crowded (greeka); buses run only to Pyrgi.
