Storm Daniel Flooding Legacy (Volos/Pelion, Sept 2023)
39° 21.6′ N · 22° 56.6′ E · approximate
In early September 2023 Storm Daniel brought Greece's worst storm on record. Zagora on Pelion took 759 mm of rain in a day, Portaria set a new record of 884 mm before its gauge failed, and floodwater tore through Volos and several Pelion villages.
Practical
On 6 September 2023 the Krafsidonas river flooded Volos, destroying a bridge and sweeping away cars and trees. At least six Pelion villages were badly damaged, and travel to Volos, parts of Pelion and Skiathos was banned for a time (Wikipedia). By 2026 the Pelion Train was running its normal heritage timetable (Hellenic Train). Lessons for sailors: September–October can bring violent Mediterranean storms with torrential rain, flash floods and debris washing into the gulf. Watch the forecasts (Olympia Radio's Pilio weather broadcasts listed in the area notes, plus emy.gr and meteo.gr). Avoid anchoring off stream mouths in heavy rain, and expect some Pelion roads and beaches to still show storm repairs. The position marks Volos.
