Panagia Spiliani Monastery (Nisyros)
36° 36.6′ N · 27° 7.8′ E
The fortress-like Monastery of the Virgin of the Cave, built partly inside a natural cave on a cliff above Mandraki next to the Knights' castle: the spiritual heart of the island.
Practical
Founded around 1400 according to tradition; walled, with Knights-era coats of arms set into its walls; its church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin (Greek Wikipedia). Climb up from Mandraki's lanes. The Geopark's Hohlaki-Kanoni route runs along the coast beneath the cliff, past the oldest pillow lavas of Nisyros.
Best for
A short climb from Mandraki for the view and the history
