Palatia Anchorage (Saria)

35° 53.2′ N · 27° 14.0′ E

A bay on Saria's north-east coast below the ruins at Palatia, where ancient and medieval stone houses stand above clear water on an island inhabited only by shepherds and goats.

Practical

MarinaTips: exposed; use only in calm conditions (24% wind protection, least from the W). Barbaros counts Palatia among the northern bays sheltered from the meltemi but warns that the bottom has rocky patches mixed with seagrass, so anchor with care and check your set. MarinaTips mentions ruins dated to about 700 AD; Wikipedia records the ruins of the ancient city of Nisyros on Saria. Alimounda beach lies just north (OSM). Natura 2000 and monk seal area: no fishing near caves, take nothing.
