Tristomo Bay (Karpathos)
35° 49.2′ N · 27° 12.4′ E
A deep, nearly enclosed natural harbour at Karpathos's north-west tip, with three mouths through a screen of islets (Tristomo means 'three mouths'). It is abandoned except for chapels and a few huts, with no phone signal, and is one of the most remote anchorages in the Aegean.
Practical
MarinaTips: hard to enter. Use the southernmost passage, which is narrow and can have high, unpredictable waves. Do not enter in bad weather, and do not try to leave while bad weather is building. Well protected from waves but open to a lot of wind; no shelter in strong S and SE winds. No mobile coverage. aegeanislands.gr: no permanent residents; visitors arrive by boat ('you will approach the settlement with your boat from the third passage'), and the Agios Nikolaos and Panormitis churches stand here. The Panormitis feast is on 8 November. No services: arrive self-sufficient from Pigadia. Pilot with a large-scale chart and in good light.
Best for
The wildest anchorage in the Dodecanese
Season
