Mount Dikeos Hike (Kos)

36° 50.1′ N · 27° 12.4′ E

Kos's highest mountain, 846 m of limestone and marble rising steeply from the south coast, topped by the chapel of the Transfiguration (Sotiros Christou).

Practical

Every year on August 5-6 hundreds of pilgrims climb its rough, difficult slopes to the summit chapel (Greek Wikipedia). Zia village sits on its northern slopes (Greek Wikipedia); this guide has no verified trail description, so ask locally for the path, start at first light, carry plenty of water and wear proper shoes. Medieval ruins, water cisterns and potsherds are scattered on the slopes. Coordinate is the OSM summit.

Best for

A dawn climb for the view over the Dodecanese

Season

Spring and autumn; very hot in Jul–Aug
