Kos Old Harbour (Mandraki, Kos)

36° 53.7′ N · 27° 17.3′ E

The palm-lined old port right under the Knights' Castle of Neratzia, with the Tree of Hippocrates and the old town a few steps from your stern. Far more atmospheric than the marina, and far noisier: this is Kos's bar quarter.

Practical

Stern-to with mooring (lazy) lines on the north-east side; the north-west side requires your own anchor, and anchors there are often lifted or crossed by superyachts and neighbours (Sailing Issues). Holding is good in mud. Earlier seasons the roughly 80-85 berths were managed by Kos Marina (kosmarina.gr; Sailing Issues), so arrangements may still be in flux. Water and power at extra charge; no WC or showers in the old harbour (mySea). Untenable on the south part of the quay in N-NW winds above Force 8; strong N-NW winds make the approach difficult with breaking seas, and the harbour is open to N-NE swell (mySea). In the approach keep the north cape at a distance. Ferries and excursion boats use the main thoroughfare. Port of entry: port police, immigration and customs are close by (see separate entry). The west part of the port has no service facilities, which is probably why berthing there has usually been free of charge (mySea west quay listing; check whether the 2026 municipal management now charges). If the old harbour is full, the free hydrofoil pier just east is the fallback (see separate entry).

Best for

A berth in the heart of Kos town, under the castle

Season

Apr–Oct; uncomfortable to untenable in strong N–NE
