Gyali Bay Anchorage (Isthmus, Giali)
36° 40.0′ N · 27° 7.6′ E
Strip-mined for pumice and far from pretty, Giali is nonetheless one of the safest places in a strong northerly or meltemi: anchor off the low sandy isthmus that joins its obsidian and pumice halves.
Practical
Anchor over sand in 4-6 m NE of the three pumice-loading piers. Holding is not good everywhere (Eagle Ray even says 'poor'), so make sure the anchor is set, and keep clear of the freighters' mooring buoys (Sailing Issues). The isthmus beach is pleasant; for snorkelling try the rocks near Agios Antonios islet. The water can be whitened by mineral dust. Hazard: a reef 0.4 nm SE of Cape Kaloutoi, Giali's southern cape. In westerlies use the cove on the east side instead (anchor in 5-10 m, good holding in sand, very shallow near the beach, quarry close by). An ActiveCaptain listing on the north side describes a sandy anchorage in a wide bay, no facilities, protected from N and NW, but a reviewer notes the north is exposed to the meltemi in summer. The island had about 21 inhabitants in 2011 (Wikipedia).
