Grana Bay & Avlaki (Nisyros)

36° 33.6′ N · 27° 10.9′ E

A small bay on Nisyros's south coast, just west of Cape Avlaki/Loutros, suited to a lunch stop under the volcano's flank, with hot springs near the church of Agios Panteleimon.

Practical

Anchor in 5-10 m over sand with some weed. The sunken pier ('Avlaki harbour') below the church is now useless for anything bigger than a dinghy, and the area has quite a few hazards (Sailing Issues). The Agios Panteleimon festival at Avlaki is July 26-27 per the Nisyros Geopark (27-28 July per Sailing Issues). Slightly west is the abandoned 'harbour' of Agia Irini, from which a British company shipped Nisyros sulphur in the late 19th century. Day stop in northerlies only.
