Chios Town Harbour

38° 22.2′ N · 26° 8.5′ E

The island capital's big, bustling ferry harbour — the only Port of Entry on Chios and the place to clear into Greece after a hop across from Çeşme. Yachts lie stern-to on the town quays with the Genoese Kastro walls, the market and the ouzeries a few steps away.

Practical

Entrance position 38°22.16'N 26°08.69'E (Noonsite); pin is the OSM harbour polygon. No laid lines — use your own anchor; CruisersWiki reports anchoring easy and holding good. Day visitors are usually directed to the SW quay facing the road and restaurants (no services). SE corner has a mole and pontoon with metered shore power (needs 220V 63A or 380V 3-phase plug). The southern quay is for larger and regular visitors: sparse rings, very high quay, pre-pay token system for water and power (16A/32A). Harbour Master contact for berthing, water and power: Stelios (Koumis Stelios), VHF 69 or +30 694 686 1747 (Noonsite, Feb 2025). The quay in front of Goody's is reserved for a Coast Guard patrol boat; avoid the quay north of the mole on the south side of the entrance (ferry and commercial wash damage). Western mole is usable in calm weather. Shelter only moderate in northerlies: sustained N wind makes the south end rolly, white caps possible inside, and the Blue Star fast ferry enters at speed. Beware big car tyres on the quay (black marks). Water quality/pressure poor; rubbish and sewer outfalls in the harbour (Noonsite). Depths 3-10 m (mySea). Harbour lights hard to see against the town at night. Port Police VHF 12. Fuel by mini-tanker to the quay (see chandlery/fuel entry).

Best for

Clearing in from Turkey, provisioning and a night in town

Season

Year-round port of entry; uncomfortable in sustained N winds and ferry wash
