Beach· Karpathos· Greece — Dodecanese, Sporades & North Aegean

Arkasa (Karpathos)

35° 28.6′ N · 27° 6.9′ E

A sandy beach below the village of Arkasa on the south-west coast, looking straight across to Kasos. Above it, on Paleokastro hill, are the acropolis of ancient Arkesia and the mosaics of the Agia Sofia basilica.

Practical

Greeka: sandy, with sunbeds, a shower and a beach bar. The water can get very choppy, and current markers are placed on the left side of the beach. Wikivoyage warns that drownings happen here every year, so swim carefully. Agios Nikolaos beach next door (35.4735, 27.1123) is calmer. A short trail leads to the Paleokastro acropolis (OSM 35.4751, 27.1131, open 24/7). Open to the meltemi; not a yacht anchorage except in calm weather.

Best for

Ancient acropolis walk and a sunset beach

Season

Calm days; heavy surf in meltemi
