Makrys Gialos (Karpathos)

35° 25.5′ N · 27° 9.5′ E

A long sandy bay in the Afiartis area on Karpathos's south-east coast beside the airport. The water is shallow and turquoise, the wind is relentless, and the bay is a favourite of windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Practical

Sand, good holding (MarinaTips). Moderate shelter: avoid strong NE and W winds. Large rusty buoys lie in the bay and there are rocks in the south-west part: approach with care. Constant wind; expect gusts off the land. Greeka puts the beach about 600 m from Karpathos Airport and notes several watersport centres around it, with no sunbeds on the beach itself. Look out for kites and boards when anchoring.

Best for

Wind-sports scene and a sandy stop on the way between Pigadia and Kasos

Season

Jun–Sep windy; avoid in strong NE or W
