Afiartis Windsurf & Kite Beaches (Karpathos)
35° 26.4′ N · 27° 9.4′ E · approximate
The bays of Afiartis on Karpathos's south-east tip, by the airport, form one of Greece's best-known windsurfing and kiting spots. The meltemi accelerates over the low southern end of the island and blows almost daily in summer.
Practical
Position is the Vathia beach mapped in OpenStreetMap; Greeka places 'Vatha' in Kipi Afiarti, about 2 km north of the airport, with a windsurf centre nearby and choppy water. Makris Gialos, by the airport, has shallow water suited to beginners, and Greeka also lists Valias and Agrilaopotamos as windsurfing beaches. Wikivoyage says beginners can take lessons in 'Chicken Bay'. Windfinder's airport station averages 15 kn from WNW, with gusts averaging 32 kn (2000–2026 data). The name 'Devil's Bay' is widely used for one of the kite spots, but we could not verify where it is, so use the beach names above. Anchor yachts well clear of the kite areas.
