Poles Bay Anchorage (Kea)

37° 33.6′ N · 24° 19.9′ E

A wild double bay on Kea's south-east coast below the terraces and temples of ancient Karthaia, reachable only on foot or by boat. Few places in the Cyclades let you swim off your anchor under an archaic temple.

Practical

Anchor in 3-6 m, mostly sand with patches of rock and weed. Holding is good to moderate, and there is room for only about two yachts (mySea). Sailingissues reports the anchor well dug in behind the short beach, but the bay took the brunt of a 45+ kn meltemi storm, so it is exposed in strong northerlies and gusts. It is open to the south-east (aegeanislands), and mySea rates it safe only up to about Force 4-5. Scuba diving is prohibited in Karthaia bay because of underwater archaeological remains (snorkelling allowed), and a 160 m submerged ancient jetty is visible. There are no facilities. The coordinate is the sailingissues/OpenSeaMap marker.

Overnight under ancient Karthaia in settled weather
