Nea Kameni Volcano Hike

36° 24.3′ N · 25° 23.8′ E

Walk up the black lava of Santorini's youngest island, in the middle of the caldera, to the 130 m crater rim. Sulphur vents still steam there, and the whole drowned volcano is visible around you.

Practical

Coordinates: the summit crater (OSM). Nea Kameni has erupted repeatedly since the 1700s, most recently in 1950, and is a protected geological park monitored by ISMOSAV; one active sulphur vent is named Jorgo (Wikipedia). Tour boats land at the piers on the north side (OSM Pier 1/Pier 2, around 36.411 N 25.401 E). The entrance fee is EUR 5 per adult (2026), collected in cash by rangers at the trailhead, with reductions for seniors, students and children (grandpl). The gravel path to the crater is a hot climb with no shade or shops: carry water, wear real shoes and stay on the marked trails. Go first thing or late afternoon, before or after the tour-boat waves. See Nea Kameni Piers & Buoys for landing your own boat.
