Fira Cruise-Ship Buoys & Tender Lane (Caldera)

36° 24.9′ N · 25° 25.5′ E

Cruise ships moor on a line of large buoys in the caldera off Fira, and their tenders shuttle continuously to the Fira Old Port (Skala). Yachts crossing between Thirasia, Nea Kameni and Skala must thread through this traffic.

Practical

Coordinates: one of the cruise-ship mooring buoys off Skala (OpenSeaMap/OSM). Other mapped ship buoys: 36.4101 N 25.4253 E, 36.4117 N 25.4280 E, 36.4119 N 25.4254 E, 36.4166 N 25.4274 E and 36.4167 N 25.4249 E, with the Skala quay light at 36.4173 N 25.4280 E and charted rocks along the foot of the cliff (36.414-36.416 N 25.427-25.428 E). The tender lane runs from the ships to the Skala quay (about 297 m long, open 24 hours, per the Municipal Port Fund); stay clear of ships swinging on their buoys and give tenders right of way in practice. The Municipal Port Fund of Thira caps cruise visitors at 8,000 per day in 2025 and 2026 and spaces disembarkation times; the daily schedule is on santoriniports.gov.gr. Port Authority VHF 12, +30 22860 22239 (sailingissues); you may be told to leave Skala when it is crowded. Watch for wash from ships and tenders. The Sea Diamond wreck lies off the cliff south of here (OSM about 36.3950 N 25.4309 E).
