Fira–Oia Caldera Hike

36° 25.1′ N · 25° 25.8′ E · approximate

The classic Santorini walk: about 10 km along the caldera rim from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli, past Skaros Rock and the Profitis Ilias chapel, to Oia. The volcano and the open caldera stay on your left the whole way.

Practical

Start is approx: the trail's informal start at the north end of Fira (the Atlantis Hotel), placed from OSM town data. Allow 3-5 hours one way. It is graded easy but hilly, with a mix of paved lanes and rocky dirt trail; the high point is near Imerovigli and you finish lower in Oia. Fira to Oia is the better direction, mostly downhill with Oia ahead. Optional detours: the Three Bells of Fira, and Skaros Rock (add 45-60 minutes). At the fork just before the Profitis Ilias chapel, keep left for caldera views (the right fork is easier). One stretch of about 150-200 m runs along a road shoulder. There is no shade and only one snack bar between Imerovigli and Oia, which is not always open, so carry water and sun protection and walk early morning or late afternoon. Return by bus (roughly every 30-60 minutes, last bus around 10-10:30pm; long queues after sunset) or by taxi (EUR 15-25, 2026). From a yacht, land by dinghy at Ammoudi or the Fira Old Port in calm weather, or bus up from Vlychada.
