Manganari Bay (Ios)
36° 39.4′ N · 25° 22.4′ E
A string of turquoise, golden-sand coves on Ios's south coast. They are the island's postcard beaches, and the anchorage most sailors use to ride out the meltemi on the south side.
Practical
Position from Sailing Issues (north and west coves); Grecosailor gives 36°39'28.2"N 25°22'09.0"E. Sand with excellent holding. Use the north or west coves; the east anchorage is not convenient. Hazards (Sailing Issues): a submerged rock east of the two tiny west beaches, and an abandoned rope mid-bay in about 12 m. In stronger northerlies, anchor in 3-5 m as close to the beaches as you can, because strong N gusts still come down. Grecosailor notes good wind shelter but noticeable swell. George Yachts gives 4-10 m sand and says it is open to the south. Ashore: a small village with tavernas, beach bars and organised and quiet coves. It is 23 km by road from the port, and summer excursion boats come in from Gialos (Visit Ios). About 6 nm from Ios harbour and 12 nm north of Santorini's Oia, so it makes a good last stop before Santorini.
Best for
Meltemi refuge on the south coast and the best swimming on Ios
Season
May-Oct; good in N-NW meltemi (gusty); open to S
