Koutalas Bay (Serifos)

37° 8.2′ N · 24° 27.4′ E

The big south-coast bay below the old mining hamlet of Koutalas, with miners' cottages along the shore, an ore-loading ramp and Kastro tis Grias (an ancient fortified site) on the hill above.

Practical

SailingIssues: much of the bottom is fouled by old anchor chains, so anchor on sand on the east side of the beach. Potentially very violent gusts come down from the north. mySea marks 4-10 m with good to very good holding, and notes that police enforce a minimum distance of 100 m from the shore. e-serifos says Koutalas and neighbouring Ganema are well protected and the tavernas (mostly summer) sell ice and water. Porto Cadena restaurant is mapped on OpenStreetMap. Ore mines lie west of Koutalas and on Cape Chalara. Trail 3 (from Aspros Pyrgos via Kastro Grias) and trail 9 (from Gyftika via Oros and Ganema) end here.

Best for
