Megalo Livadi Bay & Mining Ruins (Serifos)

37° 8.4′ N · 24° 25.8′ E

A deep west-coast bay framed by the rusting ore-loading bridge, rail tracks and the neoclassical headquarters of the old Serifos-Spiliazeza mining company, where the 1916 miners' strike ended in bloodshed.

Practical

SailingIssues: a deep bay with a steep seabed, so anchor close to the shore. Very secure holding in sand, comfortable in the meltemi. Hazards near the small north pier: a reported chain and sunken buoy fouling the bottom, running SE, and a sunken aircraft. mySea gives 5-7 m over sand and weed (holding moderate to very good), and 1.1 m at the small jetty. e-serifos says the jetty is small with few spaces. Cafes and tavernas run from Easter to October and sell ice. OpenStreetMap shows Marditsa and Kyklopas on the beach, and SailingIssues recommends the '1916' restaurant. Ashore: the iron loading bridge, the Ziller-school company headquarters with palm trees, the memorial to the strikers killed in 1916 (Wikipedia: four miners shot at the loading dock), and the miners' 'Loutra' warm-spring rooms reached over the rocks. Don't enter the 1 km mine gallery without a local guide (e-serifos). Aspros Pyrgos is a 45-minute walk east (SailingIssues). Trail 8 climbs to Megalo Chorio.
