Kalamos Monolith (Anafi)
36° 20.9′ N · 25° 50.7′ E
A sheer limestone headland rising straight out of the sea at Anafi's southeast tip, often called the second-largest monolith in Europe after Gibraltar. Rounding it under sail is the highlight of a circuit of the island.
Practical
Coordinates: the summit (OSM, elevation 463 m). Wikipedia repeats the 'second-largest monolith' claim. aegeanislands.gr calls sailing past Kalamos 'the most superb experience' of a circumnavigation. Cape Malis, the eastern tip, is at 36.3582 N 25.8573 E (OSM). Expect gusts and confused seas off the cliffs in a meltemi; give the headland a wide berth. The Drakontospilo cave lies on its north side, and the Kalamiotissa chapel sits on top (see the hike entry).
