Anafi Route 2: Roukounas to Kalamos Hike
36° 21.4′ N · 25° 49.4′ E
The big Anafi walk: a waymarked 8 km route from Roukounas beach over the island's southeast to the Zoodochos Pigi monastery and up the Kalamos monolith to the clifftop chapel of Panagia Kalamiotissa.
Practical
Coordinates: centre of OSM hiking relation 'Route 2' (from Roukounas to Kalamos via Zoodochos Pigi Monastery; 8 km, about 2 hours 45 minutes, 820 m ascent and 574 m descent, waymark '2'). Route 1 (7.4 km, about 2 hours 15 minutes) links the Chora to the same monastery via Megas Potamos, and Route 3 (6.9 km) comes from Agios Dimitrios via Agios Antonios. Crews anchored at Roukounas can start at the beach; crews at Monastiri bay can land and join the route at the monastery, cutting it to the final 90-minute climb (Greeka). The upper section is exposed and 'a bit risky' (Greeka); avoid it in a strong meltemi. Carry plenty of water; there is no shade.
Best for
A full-day summit hike from the Roukounas anchorage
Season
Spring and autumn best; dawn starts in summer
