Alyko Juniper (Cedar) Forest Nature Reserve (Naxos)
36° 59.3′ N · 25° 23.4′ E
Behind the Alyko beaches grows one of the largest sea-juniper ('cedar') forests in Greece, gnarled trees rooted in sand dunes, inside a protected nature area.
Practical
NaturaGraeca describes the sea-juniper forest on Alyko's sands as one of the largest in Greece, and Greeka notes the cedar forest and dunes are a declared protected natural area. OSM maps the protected area 'Αλυκό Δήμου Νάξου' (nature reserve, wildlife board) at this position, sourced from geodata.gov.gr. Greek Wikipedia says the central-mountain-southern coastal zone of Naxos is in the Natura 2000 network. Stay on paths, never light fires or barbecues among the junipers, and do not drive or camp on the dunes. Land by dinghy from Alyko Anchorage (Naxos).
Best for
A rare juniper-dune forest a short walk from the anchorage
