WWII Coastal Guns (Faanui / Fare Piti)

16° 29.7′ S · 151° 45.5′ W

Rusting 7-inch US naval guns from Operation Bobcat, the 1942–46 American supply base, still aimed over Teavanui Pass from the ridge above Fare Piti. It is a short, sweaty climb with lagoon views.

Practical

Coordinate from OSM ('Vieux Canons Américains', reached by the 'Chemin des canons' track), matching a Tahiti Tourisme Bobcat battery pin. Expert World Travel lists the Faanui WWII guns walk at about 20–30 minutes, moderate, doable without a guide. Further Bobcat batteries: north battery at Tereia point (16.4737°S 151.7621°W) and the Fitiiu Point battery at Haamaire on the east side (separate entry). Background: several thousand US servicemen (about 3,500 per Tahiti Tourisme) built roads, quays, a fuel depot in Faanui Bay and the Motu Mute airstrip; over 1,000 ships refueled here; the base closed in 1946 (Tahiti Tourisme, Wikipedia). WWII fresco panels at the Bora Bora Yacht Club tell the story.
