Cooking Gas (Propane/Butane) in Bora Bora

16° 29.9′ S · 151° 45.3′ W · approximate

Bora Bora has no bottle-refill service for yachts: plan to fill propane or Camping Gaz in Raiatea or Papeete, or decant from a local butane cylinder.

Practical

Noonsite (fuel and LPG page, September 2026): 'Butane or propane refills unavailable'. Floating Lab (note dated September 2021): a cruiser could not get Camping Gaz refilled in Huahine or Bora Bora, so bought a local 13 kg bottle and decanted it into their Camping Gaz bottles. A 2012 cruiser log (Vulcan Spirit) found that neither US-valve propane bottles nor European Camping Gaz could be filled in Bora Bora; they bought a large cylinder with a European fitting and gravity-decanted it, hung upside down, into their own tank, weighing the tank to avoid overfilling. Decanting carries a fire risk: do it ashore or on deck, away from ignition sources, and only with the right adapters. Refills: Raiatea Carenage fills tanks and blue Camping Gaz bottles (Floating Lab, 2021); Papeete also fills Camping Gaz. No public sales point for local cylinders is published; the coordinate is the Vaitape Total station (approx); ask there or at the supermarkets. Fill up before leaving Raiatea.
