16° 38.7′ S · 151° 31.3′ W · approximate

Taha'a is the 'Vanilla Island', producing about 80% of Polynesia's vanilla. Vanilla Tours, at the head of Hurepiti Bay, runs a well-known 4WD tour of the island built around vanilla growing.

Practical

Position approximate: the OSM point for Hurepiti Bay. Vanilla Tours owns three moorings at the end of the bay, and its dock is for customers only. Noe Plantier also runs a botanical tour of Taha'a in French, English and Italian (87 35 86 39). How vanilla works: each flower opens for one day and is pollinated by hand. The bean takes about nine months to mature, then sun-dries for another two to four months. In Faaaha's Vanilla Valley you can visit small growers, and Fare Vanira in Apu Bay has a plantation with honey and crafts (87 75 74 73). Anchor in ZMR de Hurepiti (3 boats, 48 h).
