Faie Sacred Blue-Eyed Eels
16° 43.9′ S · 150° 59.7′ W
Freshwater eels up to about 2 m long, with startling blue eyes, live in the stream under the little bridge in Faie village. Locals regard them as sacred (puhi tari'a) and a sign of abundance.
Practical
Position from OpenStreetMap (matches the Tahiti Tourisme GPS). Free. A stall by the bridge sells tins of mackerel to feed them, and the eels thrash at the surface when fed. It is on the round-island road a few km from Maeva; combine with the pearl farm and Maeva.
