Matairea Hill Archaeological Trail
16° 42.1′ S · 150° 59.5′ W
A trail up the slopes of Mata'ire'a hill behind Maeva, past forest-covered marae including Mata'ire'a Rahi and vanilla plantations.
Practical
Position: Marae Mata'ire'a Rahi (OpenStreetMap). The trail starts across the road from the Fare Pote'e (2019 cruiser report). Tahiti Tourisme rates the Matairea valley hike 'orange - quite hard'. Hazard: several OSM-mapped signs along the trail warn that the area is heavily infested with little fire ants. Wear long sleeves, check your bag and clothes before going back to the boat, and do not carry soil or plants aboard. Free. Bring water and repellent.
