Tuamotu Sandpiper Nesting Season (Tahanea)
16° 57.2′ S · 144° 34.8′ W · approximate
The endangered Tuamotu sandpiper (titi), down to about 700-1,100 birds on a handful of atolls, nests in shallow scrapes on lagoon shores, generally April to June. Tahanea is one of the atolls where it has been recorded in modern times.
Practical
Coordinate approximate: the SE-corner motu that Soggy Paws describes as home to nesting birds; sandpipers can be on any lagoon-shore motu. Wikipedia: breeding generally between April and June; nests are shallow hollows on the lagoon shore lined with grass; clutch believed to be two eggs. Rats and habitat loss are the main threats, so never carry rats ashore: keep dinghies and stores rat-free. During these months land only on bare beach below the high-water line and keep well away from scrapes. The compendium notes the atoll was protected because of this sandpiper.
