Tahanea Copra Shed Anchorage

16° 57.2′ S · 144° 34.8′ W

A clean 3 m sand spot right off the SE-corner copra house, where Nico from Faaite cuts copra for a few months each year and likes to trade lobster for useful gear.

Practical

Position from Sugar Shack (May 2021): 3 m of clear water, solid holding, no coral heads within a 360° swing, so no floats needed. 'This is very close to the copra house so we try to avoid this anchorage when the locals are working the copra.' Sugar Shack anchored on their second visit at 16°57.23'S 144°34.81'W in 3.2 m, beautiful solid sand, no bommies. Nico, originally from Faaite, speaks French, harvests copra here several months a year and loves company. He will trade fish or lobster for batteries, old sails, pots and pans. Don't wander around his house or copra fields without permission (Sugar Shack 2021; Soggy Paws). Protection is as for the SE corner: ENE to SSW.

Best for

Easy sand anchoring and a chance to meet the copra cutters

Season

Refuge in E-SE trades; avoid when copra work is under way
