South Rim Motu Anchorage (Manihi)

14° 26.6′ S · 145° 57.6′ W · approximate

A quiet lagoon anchorage off the coconut-palm motus of Manihi's south rim, about 6 nm east of the village, where three small pensions and the Blue Way dive centre sit on private motus.

Practical

Approximate and not cruiser-tested: placed about 330 m into the lagoon (north) of the Blue Way Manihi Lodge position given by Tahiti Tourisme (14.44564 S, 145.959517 W), checked against the OpenStreetMap shoreline. Sea-seek says Manihi's lagoon is navigable almost everywhere, with the pearl farms grouped in the south and central lagoon and the wildest spots in the NE, so expect farm buoys and lines on the way and pick a sand patch in good overhead light; depth is not reported, so sound and float your chain. Protection from the S-SE trades behind the motus; open to the north across the lagoon. The pensions here (Blue Way Manihi Lodge, Pension Poerani Nui at about 145.957 W, Manihi Paradise at about 145.969 W) are private full-board guesthouses: ask before landing. Poerani Nui notes it holds a liquor licence and accepts no outside bottles.

Best for

A secluded motu stop away from the village

Season

Best in S-SE trades; avoid in N-NW winds
