Kamoka Pearl Farm (Ahe)
14° 28.9′ S · 146° 22.1′ W
A working pearl farm built on a coral head in Ahe's lagoon, founded in 1990 by Patrick Humbert, who first sailed to Ahe with his family in the early 1970s; cruisers come for the daily family-style lunch, the farm tour and pearls bought at the source.
Practical
Position is the OpenStreetMap feature for Kamoka Pearl Farm, about 1.5 nm south of Tiareroa Pass. The 'Pearl house' sits on a big coral head about 300 yards from shore where the grafting and the meals happen. Contact Patrick before arriving: humbertpatrick@yahoo.fr (2021; an earlier address was patrickhumbert@yahoo.fr) or +689 87 21 12 64 (2017; verify locally). Patrick said in 2017 they sell nothing but pearls. In Oct 2023 Elvira Sweden visited, heard Patrick's story and bought pearls, being ferried by his friend Temarii (phone 87 39 68 83; speaks no English) rather than using a mooring in strong wind. A small magasin run by Rosaline on the neighbouring motu sold basic groceries and Hinano beer (2017).
