Ahe Pass Snorkel

14° 27.5′ S · 146° 21.5′ W · approximate

A fast drift through Tiareroa Pass on the flood over gin-clear water and healthy colourful coral, with barracuda, nurse sharks and blacktips below.

Practical

Position is the sea-seek point for the pass (approximate start). Mata'irea (2011) dinghied across from the village and did two drifts each on the incoming tide at about 5 kt, one person snorkeling while the other followed in the dinghy to pull them out before the turbulence where current meets wind chop at the lagoon end. Only on the flood, with a dinghy minder and handheld VHF.
