Hokatu Petroglyph Museum and Craft Centre

8° 55.8′ S · 139° 31.6′ W

Hokatu's small museums show photos and plaster casts of the island's petroglyphs, and its artisan centre is, in Chugach's words, 'a true cavern of Ali Baba', the best craft centre they saw in the Marquesas.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap (Maison du Pétroglyphe). French Wikipedia lists three museums in Hokatu: geology, petroglyph and stone. Usually reached by road from Vaipaee (Chugach: about 14 km from Vaipaee to Hane; Wikipedia: Hokatu is about 3 km from Hane), or by the trail from Hane via Meiaute. Bring cash (XPF) for carvings. Noonsite: each Ua Huka village has an arts and crafts centre, and the best prices come from buying directly from carvers. Routard: the craftspeople of Vaipaee, Hane and Hokatu readily open their workshops; Ua Huka is best known for wood carving, plus tapa and monoi. Jacaranda (2015): a nice artisan shop beside the small petroglyph museum.
