Ua Huka Museum (Musée Communal)
8° 55.9′ S · 139° 33.3′ W
The island's archaeological museum (opened 1989) holds tikis, carvings, adzes, everyday objects and a reconstructed cave dwelling. Cruisers rank it the best museum in the Marquesas. It has moved from Vaipaee to the small complex by the airport.
Practical
Coordinate from OpenStreetMap (Musée communal de Ua Huka), next to the airport, closer to Hane than to Vaipaee. Migration (Feb 2024 and Jan 2023): excellent, but check that it is open by calling or visiting the Vaipaee mairie first (40 91 60 26). It is a long walk from Vaipaee, so hitchhike. Villa Veritas (May 2022): a passing driver unlocked it for them and asked them to lock up when they left. Chugach (2019): the 2013 festival complex beside it has a craft centre where carver Pava sells his work, plus a carving school. Make a day of it with the arboretum.
