Hane Bay (Ua Huka)

8° 55.7′ S · 139° 32.0′ W · approximate

A wider bay than Vaipaee, below Hane village and the jagged 'Dents' peaks, with the steep rock of Motuhane at its mouth. Holding is good in sand. Mantas and dolphins visit, but landing depends on the swell.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: estimated off Hane village and the Sea Museum on the east side of the bay (OpenStreetMap, Wikipedia), inside Motuhane islet. No published waypoint. SY Maya (2020): usually some swell; the east side is a little better, and a stern anchor helps. Sand is good holding. Dinghy landing is not easy, depending on the waves. Villa Veritas (June 2022): comfortable for anchoring, but too much swell to land the dinghy safely. Chugach (2019): locals say it suffers less from swell bouncing between the shores than Vaipaee. Mata'irea (2007) couldn't get the anchor to bite and left in heavy swell; the buoy at the mouth was unlit. Plans for a dock with a partial breakwater in the NW corner were displayed at the mairie in 2018 and mentioned again in 2020. Its status is unknown, so verify locally. A few mantas usually present and dolphins seen (SY Maya). Land excursions: Sea Museum, Meiaute tikis, Hokatu.
