Hane Ancient Tiki Site (Meiaute)
8° 54.8′ S · 139° 31.7′ W · approximate
A walk of about 20-25 minutes up through the forest from Hane to Meiaute, on the slopes of Meiaute peak. Tourism sources call it the oldest archaeological site in the Marquesas: three red volcanic-tuff tikis about 1 m tall stand among me'ae platforms.
Practical
Coordinate approximate: the OpenStreetMap 'Tiki' monument node above Hane, which lies on the trail towards Meiaute peak; the site has no other published coordinate. Chugach (2019): about a 20-minute walk from Hane. SY Maya (2020): the trail continues past the tiki site through forest with wild fruit and on to Hokatu. Dating: Hane's coastal dune site is one of the earliest settlements in the Marquesas. Radiocarbon dates centre on about 900-1200 AD; earlier claims of 300-600 AD or 400 BC come from pottery dating that has since been revised. Be respectful: do not climb on the platforms or touch the tikis.
