Hivaroa Beach (Manihi)

14° 27.3′ S · 146° 3.9′ W · approximate

The beach on the motu across Tairapa Pass from the village, recommended by local hosts for a swim and a picnic away from the houses.

Practical

Approximate: placed on the motu immediately west of Tairapa Pass (between the pass and the airport motu) from the Manihi Lodge description 'Hivaroa beach on the other side of the pass'; the exact stretch of sand is not mapped. Go by dinghy at slack water only: the pass runs up to about 6 kt and the old fish pens three quarters of the way through are an entanglement hazard. The same host mentions crossing the 'hoa' (shallow reef channel) on foot as a sporting challenge; wear reef shoes.
