Carenage Reef Snorkel (Apataki)

15° 33.0′ S · 146° 15.4′ W · approximate

Clear-water snorkeling near the Carenage: the yard's little boat 'marina' and a coral reef marked by a stick about a mile NW of the anchorage, with blacktip and reef sharks on the nearby motus.

Practical

Position estimated about 1 nm NW of the Carenage anchorage from the OCC description (2015); look for the stick marker. Nehenehe (2018) found awesomely clear water at Rua Vahine with blacktips and reef sharks. A 2011 visitor met a large reef shark in the shallows at night while rinsing a coral cut; stay out of the water at dusk if bleeding. Ciguatera was not present at Apataki in 2015 (Kalliope); ask locals before eating reef fish.
