Apataki Pearl Farm Visit
15° 33.5′ S · 146° 14.5′ W · approximate
The Carenage family also runs a small black-pearl farm, and their son Tony trained as a jeweller in Papeete; the compendium names Apataki (with Fakarava) as one of the best places in the Tuamotus for a casual pearl-farm visit and buying pearls.
Practical
Positioned at the Carenage yard on Motu Totoro (approximate). Ask at the yard about seeing the farm and Tony's jewellery. A 2011 visitor found the pearls beautiful but pricier than expected; buy only from registered sellers with a receipt, since direct sales by farmers are regulated. Arrange through the yard; no fixed hours.
Best for
Seeing black pearls from oyster to necklace
