Salt Pans, Slave Huts & Obelisks
12° 1.6′ N · 68° 15.1′ W
Rows of tiny stone huts built in 1850 for enslaved salt workers stand beside the glittering pink salt pans, with tall painted obelisks that once told ships where to load - a stark reminder of the colonial salt trade.
Practical
Huts built 1850 as sleeping quarters for enslaved workers who walked seven hours to Rincon each Friday to see their families; four obelisks in red, white, blue and orange served as navigation marks for loading ships (Tourism Corporation Bonaire). Roadside along EEG Boulevard; free. The Red Slave dive site is beside the second set of huts (experienced divers only). Coordinate: OpenStreetMap.
