Northwest Point dive sites: The Crack, Amphitheater & Shark Hotel

21° 51.3′ N · 72° 20.7′ W · approximate

A run of vertical-wall sites off Provo's northwest tip, where the wall starts at about 35 ft and horse-eye jacks, reef sharks, black coral and purple tube sponges are the signature sights.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: a point on the wall west of Northwest Point (derived from the Northwest Point Marine National Park location); the individual dive moorings aren't published, so go with a dive shop or ask one. Dive Provo descriptions: The Crack is a deep crevice cutting the wall from 50 ft to about 100 ft, with big grouper and snapper, and sharks and eagle rays likely. Amphitheater has a vertical drop to an undercut bowl 10–15 ft deep with a sand floor at 85 ft, a large elephant-ear sponge and rare orange rope sponges near 90 ft. Shark Hotel's wall starts near 45 ft and drops to a shelf at 80–100 ft, with some of the country's largest pillar coral by the mooring. Nearby are Hole in the Wall (a one-diver chimney from 55 ft that exits the wall at 95 ft) and Eel Garden (a shallow sand bowl of garden eels). Conditions are good most of the year. National park: no fishing or taking, and no anchoring on coral.
