Morant Cays
17° 25.0′ N · 75° 59.2′ W
Four low cays on a reef-fringed bank about 33 miles SSE of Jamaica's east end, constantly washed by breaking trade-wind seas: a seabird Important Bird Area and a hazard for boats rounding Morant Point.
Practical
Position is the Fl 10s light tower on North-East Cay (Virgintino). Wikipedia: 16 ha of land on the rim of the 100 sq km Morant Bank; seasonal fishermen's camp on NE Cay; HMS Pelican wrecked here in 1780. Currents among the cays observed to 3 knots with no predictable pattern. Diving on or removing anything from the many wrecks is illegal. SE Cay is a bird preserve. Not an anchorage for cruisers.
