Isla Popa (Popa 1 & Popa 2 villages)

9° 10.8′ N · 82° 7.5′ W

The archipelago's second-largest island (53 km²): forested hills, mangrove shores and small Ngäbe fishing villages on the quiet southern edge of Almirante Bay, rarely visited by yachts.

Practical

Position is the GeoNames island point; villages Isla Popa Número Uno (9.1913, -82.1506) and Número Dos (9.2204, -82.1406) are on the shore (GeoNames). Lies 200 m from the mainland, south of Bastimentos and west of Cayo de Agua, separating Almirante Bay from Chiriquí Lagoon (Wikipedia). Important Bird Area with 173 recorded bird species (Visit Panama; BirdLife via Wikipedia). Sandubidi on Popa 2 offers Ngäbe cultural exchanges (Visit Panama). Our sources give no surveyed anchorage depths — use the Bauhaus guide and good light; the Canal Sumwood and Canal Loma Partida (Split Hill) channels run past its southern end.
