Hot Tub Anchorage (East Holandes)

9° 35.1′ N · 78° 41.5′ W

The protected sandy swath just before the Swimming Pool, south of Ukupsuit and Kalugirdup cays, ringed by reefs; quieter than the Pool, with nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays and whale bones on the nearby reefs.

Practical

Position 09°35.067'N 078°41.504'W, in sand off the beach just inside the channel (Spirit of Argo 2016). The entrance through the reef is tight: the reef drops off steeply on both sides, the channel was free of coral heads, and waves lift over the reefs at the mouth. Don't block the narrow channel; tour and cruiser traffic uses it constantly. Snorkel the small reef east of the anchorage and the big reef due south ('Nap Garden'). The islands here are mostly mangrove: when the wind drops no-see-ums swarm. Ogoppiriadup Cay next door has a big beach all round. Cruising World (2002) calls the Hot Tub the protected sandy swath before you get into the Pool, with a third pocket nearby known as the Jacuzzi.

Best for

Better shelter than the Swimming Pool, with reef snorkelling at the door
