East Holandes Sand-Knoll Anchorage (West of the Swimming Pool)

9° 35.3′ N · 78° 40.9′ W

A tiny bug-free sand cay on the route into the Swimming Pool, NW of Banedup, where you can have a beach and a reef to yourself a few hundred metres from the crowd.

Practical

Position 09°35.284'N 078°40.914'W: drop on one of the sandy knolls in about 2 to 3 m; the bottom slopes to 15 m, so use plenty of scope (Spirit of Argo 2016). Nearby they also anchored at 09°35.256'N 078°40.876'W in 6 m clear sand, good holding but dropping quickly to 20 m, and at 09°35.292'N 078°40.879'W (aim for 5 to 6 m and veer extra scope). Good breeze, few bugs, fire pits and wood ashore. Good snorkelling in the channel to the Swimming Pool and channels to the outer reef. A great anchorage in winter when wind and current run north; not in summer when winds can swing right round and put you on the sand and grass ahead. Constant boat traffic to the Pool; fruit and veggie boats call.

Best for

A quieter East Holandes spot within dinghy reach of the Pool

Season

Dec–Apr when the wind is steady; avoid in summer wind shifts
