Sea-Turtle Nesting on the Outer Cays
9° 35.4′ N · 78° 40.5′ W · approximate
From March to October green sea turtles haul out to lay eggs on the deserted beaches of the outer cays, and the Guna enforce a ban on turtle fishing that cruisers are expected to respect.
Practical
Coordinate approximate: set in the Holandes, among the uninhabited outer cays; nesting is spread across deserted beaches comarca-wide and no source names specific nesting islands. Season Mar–Oct for green turtles (Toucan Discovery). The San Blas cruisers' radio net has discussed enforcing the local turtle fishing ban (Spirit of Argo 2016). Do not buy turtle meat, eggs or shell, and report offers to the net. If you go ashore on an uninhabited cay in nesting season, keep to the wet sand, avoid flattened tracks and body pits above the tide line, keep dogs aboard (dogs are restricted on many islands anyway), and don't shine lights on the beach at night. Leave no fishing line or plastic on the beach.
Best for
Respecting nesting beaches on quiet-cay walks
